“One step at a time is enough for me” stated Gandhi, meaning that he was intended to do the things without hurry but with coherence and in a peaceful way. Aware of this small truth, we have chosen to call this project “A mano a mano” (“step by step”), with an obvious homage to the great Italian singer Rino Gaetano. The hand that is represented in our logo is the symbol of doing, of the practice, of the change that we want to see in the world. “A mano a mano” is oriented towards human rights protection, such as the right to life, to education, to health, to dignity and equality. The project officially started on 12th November 2012.
It is possible to find a double meaning in the name. On the one hand, a path that intends to unfold step by step, little by little humbly and ceaselessly. On the other hand, the title recalls the image of “passing the baton” from one hand to the other, as if there were a set of people that help each other holding out their hands. To take place an action, a change, requires a human being. But in order to give one’s best, in every experience and in every situation, it is essential for everyone of us to be put in the best conditions to do it.
And this is the thought that triggered the project that follows. It is thanks to direct experience and the constructive confrontation with various realities of the world of voluntary work that the desire to give life to this project arose. A project that, by using new technologies, optimizes the investments in terms of human and economic resources.
The first halt is in Kolkata, a city to which we are bound. We are aware of its environmental problems, but also of the great opportunities linked to a millennial culture such as the Indian one. Our challenge is that of turning these resources into development opportunities for the people respecting local traditions.
